Our Breeding Program
We only breed a litter occasionally, when we believe the puppies will contribute towards improving the breed and we want to keep a puppy back for ourselves. We aim to produce dogs of excellent quality and type, of a compact shape and as close fitting to the breed standard as possible. We believe temperament is important and strive for dogs that are confident, intelligent and versatile; capable of doing the job they were originally bred to do. We also compete at shows to get judges opinions on our dogs strong points and faults. Through health testing, we do everything we can to maximize the chances of our puppies living long and healthy lives, free from disease. We study the pedigrees of both lines to know what is behind the dogs. Overall, when breeding we try to combine all of these factors and aim produce the best Bernese Mountain Dog.
All our puppies are raised in our family home, in a loving environment. We make a big effort with socialising the puppies and follow the Puppy Culture program [www.puppyculture.com] which includes Early Neurological Stimulation and exposing them to many new sights, sounds, experiences, objects, surfaces, people and animals. We begin housebreaking them from the age of three weeks and getting them used to being handled and groomed. They are wormed around three times, microchipped and registered with the IKC. We try to minimize vaccines in our dogs; getting the balance between immunity to disease yet not overloading their systems with unnecessary chemicals [the WSAVA guide is a good starting point] so puppies will receive one parvovirus dose at about seven weeks. We will give new puppy owners our advice for the future vaccine program for their individual puppy. We get them used to being in the car through short rides. All new puppy owners receive an information pack and lifetime help and support with their new dog, who we hope to receive updates on regularly and meet up with when possible.
